Wilson, Harry. Guns, gun control, and elections : the politics and policy of firearms. Lanham, Md: Rowman & Littlefield, 2007.
In Harry Wilson’s book Guns, gun control, and elections: the politics and policy of firearms, Wilson presents a discussion of gun laws and policies in America. He shows both sides of the issue in his book. Wilson talks about how the courts are basically in the middle on the issue right now. Wilson does a good job of analyzing current publications and media opinions in his book as well. Wilson admits that the media shows a great amount of bias in their reports on gun control. He says that it is the media that is showing the most bias towards gun control. He found that many leading news reports are showing much more reports that favor pro-control rather than anti. He then goes on to say how this is causing many Americans who do not lnow a lot about guns to become more in favor of control. This text will help me greatly in seeing both sides of the argument.
Monroe, Jefferey. Homicide and gun control : the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act and homicide rates. New York: LFB Scholarly Pub, 2008.
In this book Jefferey Monroe presents his analysis of the Brady Bill on gun control. Monroe does a descriptive analysis on how the bill has had no real significant drop on adult homicide rates. Monroe reports how statistically the law has had virtually no effect on the homicide rates in America. He also shows how the law has not worked on the larger secondary gun market, which includes illegal purchases and trade amongst family and friends. He also shows ways in which the law can be changed to help improve it. This resource will help me understand the Brady Bill more which is one of the most important bills on the issue.
Zimmring, Frank. "Is Gun Control Likely to Reduce Violent Killings?" The University of Chicago Law Review 4th ser. 35 (1968): 721-37.
Frank Zimring’s article is about how gun control affects the rate of violent killings. Zimring specifically uses Chicago as a case study for use of gun control laws. This article is more in favor of the restrictions. He has many good statistics that show that the use of firearms is one of the most popular means for homicide. He also points out that it is possible that people who commit homicide are not necessarily going to kill that person unless they have a specific way to do it. This article will help me see how the items have changed since the article was published and also information on why exactly people kill.
Deutsch, Stuart. "The Effect of Massachusetts' Gun Control Law On Gun-Related Crimes in the City of Boston." Sage Journal 1 (1977):
Stuart Jay Deutsch’s article is similar to that of Zimring’s article. He talks about how new gun control laws are playing a role in the reduction of crime rates in Boston. By using this article along with Zimring’s I can compare and contrast the two cities and how the laws have affected them. Also I can compare how the change in the time period affected the crime rates in the two different cities.
Carter, Gregg. Gun control in the United States: a reference handbook. Santa-Barbra: ABC-CLIO, 2006.
Gregg Carter’s book Gun Control in the United States: A Reference Handbook is a great non bias look at gun control in the United Sates. This book shows all the different sides to the issue in America. The book presents facts about both sides of the issue and does not look to make any claims about the issue. This is good because many of the publications on gun control are looked at simply as should the second amendment exist or not. However, this book shows both sides in a well organized manual.
Copel, Dave. "Stick to Your Guns, Senator." National Review (2009).
This article is one that is very recent which makes it a useful source. The article is about the battle between senator Gillibrand and representative McCarthy in New York for the senate seat in the next election. The article does a good job of showing what the gun debate is going to be like in the furture and how the next congress may deal with it.
Brustman, Mary J. "Gun Control on Trial: Inside the Supreme Court Battle over the Second Amendment." Library Journal Reviews (2009).
This is a short article describing the decision on the recent supreme court trial on gun control, District of Columbia v. Heller. This article shows how the court ruled that it is the constitutional right of Americans to bear arms, however that is about all that the supreme court ruled. This is one of the more recent cases that involved gun control so this should help to look and see how the case will help shape the future of the laws.
